Gas Dryer Igniter Not Working? Signs and Fixes (Ventura)
A gas dryer that clicks repeatedly but never lights is one of the most common gas dryer complaints we see in Ventura, and it almost always traces back to the same handful of causes.
A Failing Igniter Is the Most Likely Cause
The igniter glows to ignite the gas, and a weakening one can still glow but fail to reach the temperature needed to actually light the burner. This is why the dryer keeps clicking and attempting ignition without success, cycling through the same failed attempt repeatedly.
A Failed Flame Sensor Won’t Let Gas Flow
The flame sensor confirms ignition actually happened before allowing the gas valve to stay open. If the sensor itself has failed, the system can shut the gas off as a safety measure even if the igniter is working correctly, which produces a similar clicking-without-heat symptom.
The Gas Valve Solenoid Itself
Less commonly, the valve solenoid that physically opens to let gas through can fail electrically, even when both the igniter and flame sensor are functioning normally. This is a less frequent cause but worth ruling out if the more common parts test fine.
Why This Is Not a DIY Repair
Gas system components should only be serviced by someone comfortable working around a live gas line, and the connection itself should meet current code. See our full licensing overview for California dryer repair for more on what qualifications actually matter here.
What We Check
We test the igniter, flame sensor, and valve as a set rather than replacing parts one at a time, since these three components work together and a symptom from one can look identical to a symptom from another. Our gas dryer specialists can usually pin down which one has actually failed on the same visit.
Gas Igniter Questions
My dryer clicks a few times then stops trying. Is that the igniter?
Usually yes, this is a very typical igniter failure pattern. The control board gives up attempting ignition after a set number of tries as a built-in safety feature.
Is a weak gas smell during these failed attempts normal?
A brief smell during a failed ignition attempt can happen, but a persistent or strong gas smell is not something to wait out. Turn off the gas supply to the dryer and have it looked at the same day.
