Call (805) 940-2284Common Dryer Problems
What are the common signs my dryer needs repair right away?
Stop using the dryer and call a technician if you notice a burning smell, the drum runs but produces no heat, the machine shuts off partway through a cycle, or you see visible damage to the power cord or outlet.
Why is my dryer not drying clothes properly, even though it runs?
This usually points to restricted airflow rather than a heating failure. A clogged lint filter, a blocked exhaust vent, or an overloaded drum are the most common causes of a dryer that runs normally but leaves clothes damp.
Why does my dryer vibrate or shake violently?
Excessive vibration is usually different from a squeal or thump. It often points to worn drum support rollers, a dryer that is not sitting level, or an unbalanced load. Left unaddressed, vibration can loosen other components over time.
Can a failing dryer increase my energy bill?
Yes. A dryer working harder than it should, often because of a blocked vent or a failing heating element, can take multiple cycles to dry a single load, which shows up as a real increase in your energy usage over time.
Why does my dryer take two or three cycles to dry a normal load?
This is almost always an airflow problem rather than a heating problem. A blocked or crushed exhaust vent restricts how much moist air the dryer can push out, so it recirculates and slows drying.
Gas Dryer Safety
What should I do if I smell gas near my dryer?
Turn off the gas supply at the shutoff valve if you can do so safely, leave the area, and call a licensed technician or your gas utility. Do not attempt to diagnose the appliance yourself in that situation.
Is a gas dryer that will not start a fire hazard?
Not usually. In most cases, a failed igniter or flame sensor causes the dryer’s safety system to prevent gas flow entirely, which is a safe failure, not a dangerous one. The real fire risk with any dryer comes from lint buildup in the vent path.
Do gas dryer repairs need a licensed technician in California?
Repairing an existing gas dryer typically does not require a permit, but any work on the gas line itself, such as replacing a shutoff valve or connector, should be done by a licensed technician familiar with California gas appliance requirements.
Why does my gas dryer click but never ignite?
This points to a failing igniter that is not getting hot enough to trigger the gas valve, or a flame sensor that is shutting gas flow because it never detects a flame. Both are common, inexpensive repairs.
Ventless and Heat Pump Dryers
How do I know if it is the condenser or the compressor?
A dirty condenser usually shows up as a slow cycle that still eventually dries clothes. A failing compressor is more serious: the dryer runs and tumbles but clothes stay cold and wet, sometimes with an error code. We check the condenser first since it is the simpler, less expensive fix, and tell you plainly if it turns out to be the compressor.
Why is my ventless dryer taking so much longer than before?
The most common cause is a dirty condenser unit, which loses efficiency as lint builds up over time. This is a routine maintenance step most ventless dryer owners do not realize they need.
What is the difference between a condenser dryer and a heat pump dryer?
Both are ventless, but a heat pump dryer uses a refrigerant cycle to recycle heat, making it more energy efficient, while a standard condenser dryer uses cooler air to condense moisture and typically runs a bit hotter.
Repair Cost and Value
How much does dryer repair typically cost?
Cost depends on the specific part and issue, but most common repairs like a thermal fuse, belt, or thermostat are well under half the price of a new dryer. We diagnose in person and give you a firm price before any work starts. See our full cost guide for more detail.
How do I know if I am being overcharged for a dryer repair?
Ask for the diagnosis in plain terms before any work starts, and get a quote that separates the part cost from labor. A technician who cannot explain what failed or why a part needs replacing is a warning sign.
Is it worth repairing an older dryer, or should I replace it?
Usually it is worth repairing if the dryer is under 8 years old, the issue is a single part, and the repair cost is well under half the price of a new unit. See our repair or replace guide for the full breakdown.
Why do newer dryers sometimes cost more to repair than older ones?
Newer dryers rely more heavily on electronic control boards and sensors, which can cost more to replace than the simpler mechanical parts found in older models. This is part of why age alone does not always predict repair cost.
Maintenance and Prevention
How often should I clean my dryer vent?
We recommend having the exhaust vent professionally inspected once a year, in addition to cleaning the lint trap every load. Coastal Ventura homes near Pierpont and the Westside benefit from extra attention due to salt air corrosion on vent hoods.
Is dryer lint really a fire hazard?
Yes. The U.S. Fire Administration estimated about 2,900 residential clothes dryer fires per year during 2008–2010, and more recent USFA data identifies failure to clean as the leading contributing factor in clothes dryer fires during 2018–2020. We check the vent and lint path on every repair visit, not just the part that failed.
What does a musty or dead animal smell from my dryer vent mean?
A musty smell often points to trapped moisture in the vent path. A dead animal smell usually means a small animal entered the exhaust vent from outside, drawn to the warmth. An exterior vent cover that still allows lint to exit but blocks animals can prevent this.
