Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry? Common Causes (Ventura, CA)

A dryer that suddenly needs two or three cycles to finish a load that used to take one is one of the most common complaints we hear from Ventura homeowners, and the cause is usually simpler than people expect.

The Most Common Cause: Restricted Airflow

A blocked or partially blocked vent is behind the majority of slow-drying complaints we see. As lint builds up along the duct or at the exterior hood, less hot air can escape, so the dryer has to run longer to remove the same amount of moisture. See our dryer vent cleaning page for what a full cleaning involves.

Other Causes Worth Ruling Out

  • A worn door seal letting heat escape during the cycle
  • A failing heating element that is not reaching full temperature
  • An overloaded drum, since packing in too much laundry restricts tumbling and airflow
  • A clogged lint trap that was not cleaned before the load

A Simple Test You Can Run Yourself

Go outside while the dryer is running and check the exterior vent hood. You should feel strong, warm airflow and see the flap pushed open. Weak airflow or a flap that barely moves points toward a vent blockage rather than a mechanical part failing inside the dryer itself.

When It Is Not the Vent

If the exterior airflow test comes back strong and the dryer is still slow, the issue is more likely a specific part rather than the vent path. See our gas dryer troubleshooting page or electric dryer troubleshooting page depending on your unit type for what we check next.

Slow Drying Questions

My dryer used to take one cycle and now takes three. Is that always the vent?

Not always, but it is the most common cause by far. A quick airflow check at the exterior hood while the dryer runs will usually tell you whether the vent is the issue before assuming a bigger repair is needed.

Can overloading the dryer really cause slow drying?

Yes. A drum packed too full restricts both airflow and the tumbling needed to expose all the fabric to heat evenly, which can noticeably extend drying time even on a fully healthy machine.
